Reface when the bones are good
Refacing replaces every door and drawer front, wraps the frames and end panels, and upgrades hinges and slides to soft-close. It makes sense when two things are true: the boxes are plywood or solid wood and still square, and the layout already works for how you cook. Thousands of Frisco kitchens built between 1995 and 2012 pass both tests, which is why refacing at 2,000 to 9,000 dollars is often the smartest money in the house.
Replace when the layout fights you
No new doors fix a corner you cannot reach, uppers stopping a foot short of the ceiling, or a peninsula that blocks the room. If you are working around your kitchen instead of in it, refacing polishes a problem. That is when a full custom kitchen at 12,000 to 28,000 dollars earns its cost, because the layout is the product.
The particleboard exception
